                          Parish Groups

Apart from the service-oriented involvements listed in the preceding pages, one might also enter more deeply into the life of the parish by joining any of the following:

                          Bereavement Support Group
Designed to lend some measure of support and encouragement—through prayer and honest sharing—to anyone who has recently experienced the death of a loved one. Offered periodically for sessions of six weeks.

                          Catholic Daughters of the Americas
The largest national organization of Catholic women, offering charitable, social and spiritual opportunities for the women of the parish.

                          Charismatic Prayer Community
Meets weekly on Monday evenings to praise the Lord in the power of the Holy Spirit, through song, sharing of Scripture, and personal faith witness.

                          Catholic Youth Organization (CYO)
Offers a variety of sports-related activities for the children and adolescents of the parish, fostering not only athletic skill but also discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship and cooperation.

                          Divorced and Separated Support Group
Allows men and women who have experienced the breakdown of a marriage to find encouragement through an eight-week program shared with others of similar experience, and monthly evening meetings for continuing support.

                          Friendly Seniors
Weekly meetings afford an opportunity for the older members of the community to enjoy one another’s company in a relaxed and genial setting, and thereby to continue valuable social relationships.

                          Knights of Columbus
A long-standing organization of Catholic men concerned with the support of the Church, primarily through the building up of family life. While this is not a parish organization per se, the Bellmore Council draws heavily for its membership from St. Barnabas parishioners.

                          Nocturnal Adoration Society
Gathers for one hour in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament for devotional prayer and silent adoration. The group meets every first Friday of the month.

                          Small Christian Communities
A response to Pope John Paul II’s exhortation to all believers that we deepen our spiritual lives. Intimate gatherings in the homes of fellow parishioners to read the Scriptures and share the joys and struggles of daily life are the basis of this special experience.

                          Rosary Society
Organized in honor of the Blessed Mother, this group of women meets monthly and dedicates itself to the planning of various social and fund-raising events held in the parish throughout the year.

                          St. Vincent de Paul Society
An international Catholic lay organization dedicated to bringing effective aid to the needy and the poor. This group works in concert with Parish Outreach to offer practical assistance to those who come to our parish in search of food, clothing, housing, etc.

                          Scouting
The parish is host to a number of scouting organizations for both girls and boys.

                          Tots and Moms
Gives mothers of young children a weekly opportunity to come together for relaxed sharing and mutual support while the little ones are looked after.

                          Widows and Widowers
A support group for widowed men and women who gather on a monthly basis to socialize and encourage one another.

                          Youth Group
A community of parish teenagers who come together to enjoy each other’s company in a non-threatening and supportive environment. Meetings often revolve around some issue facing adolescents today. Special events, outings and retreat opportunities are also included in the year’s calendar
