December 19, 2004

My dear friends,

Gathering together today we celebrate the 4th Sunday of Advent when in the Gospel we hear of the faithfulness of Mary and Joseph, called as they were in the midst of their own preparations for marriage, to be the bearers of God’s word, Mary as the mother of the Lord, and Joseph as the chosen protector and foster-father. Confused by the visitation of angels and dreams in the night, they accept the challenge that the messenger of God has given to each of them. Their fidelity inspires us to this day to see the hand of God at work in the varied moments of our lives.

With a busy week ahead of us, we will find ourselves on Christmas Eve prepared to celebrate hopefully the gift of God to each and every one of us on the birthday of the Lord Jesus. For every person the day takes on different experiences but for all of us the celebration begins and ends in gratitude that God has blessed us so with the gift of his Son as a human person dwelling in our midst.

The words of the angels to the shepherds ring in our ears again this year. Their message of “peace to all people of good will” stirs our hearts realizing as we do that the world in which we live is not at peace. Perhaps this reality will redouble our prayerful petitions to the Lord Jesus, the Prince of Peace, that he would bring a lasting peace to all parts of our fragile world. We might well pray too for peace not only in war torn Iraq but also in all the parts of the world where hearts are not at peace. This may include our homes and our towns. Peace is a God given gift that we God’s people help to create and bring about. Let our prayer be that we might be peace-filled and peaceable people as we enter this holy time bringing that gift to one another.

As we all gather at the altar of the Lord let us pray that peace will come to our world and that those who are separated from their families by the war may soon be reunited with them.

Your parish staff joins me in wishing each of you and your family the blessings of Christmas and prays that all of you will find the gift of God’s loving presence in your hearts and in your homes today and in the year to come.

A Blessed Christmas to All!

Love and Prayers,

-Father Peter
