Be An Angel!
Gift-giving and gift-receiving are meant to remind us of the real meaning behind our celebration of Christmas - God’s priceless gift of His Son, Jesus. And since the time that Mary and Joseph wandered homeless into Bethlehem, providing for the needy has always been a Christmas tradition. Again this year our parish has made available baskets filled with Angel Tags, each angel carrying the name of a gift needed by someone in our community. All gifts are to be brought to the church lobby by this weekend. A special collection box will be placed for gift cards & certificates. Attach your Angel Tags, but do not wrap the gifts, as we will have wrap and ribbon available to go with them. The gifts will be distributed during the week of December 13th - 17th, so make sure you beat the December 12th deadline! God bless your generosity...through it may Jesus be born once more in all of our hearts this Christmas.

Bread & Wine
The Eucharistic bread & wine for this week is in memory of Ted Schimoler on his 15th Anniversary.

What’s Up, Up There?
You won’t believe it – but it’s true. If you look on the side of the Church between the rectory and the Church you will see that the scaffolding is coming down. Yes…..we are at that stage of deconstruction. The high points are completed and the process of working their way down the sides of the Church has begun. There is hope that I won’t need the extra yards of pine roping to decorate the scaffolding!!!! Let us rejoice and be glad….they are ON TIME as promised.

December 12, 2004

My dear friends,

In the past you’ve heard me on this topic but the recent announcement of Federated Department stores brings it to mind again. Federated has declared that employees are not allowed to use the “C” word in greeting customers. The “C” word is Christmas. Employees cannot wish someone a “Merry Christmas” only the greeting “Happy Holidays” is acceptable.

People all over are reacting to this. One woman told me she’d never shop at a Federated store again. In a local store, the sign “Happy Holidays” brought a negative reaction from a shopper as I was standing nearby. Needless to say there are as many opinions on this matter as there are opinion givers.

Well……I have little problem with the greeting “Happy Holidays” to people about whom you know little of their religious background. But I do believe that we – the Christians of this world – need to sustain a tradition that reaches back centuries of greeting one another with a sincere “Merry Christmas.” Earlier in the life of the world people had many greetings for one another besides “Good Morning.” To this day, the Austrian and German people use a phase in greeting one another that means “I greet the Christ in you.” What a beautiful greeting!

To wish someone a “Merry Christmas” is to say have a merry and happy Christ Day. Again, this is such an appropriate greeting. With all the effort we put into celebrating this special day in the life of the world, we certainly shouldn’t forget the main reason for all the fuss and that is it is “Christ Day” or “Christmas.”

And so, let me encourage you to join me in hearty greetings of “Merry Christmas” to all who share our belief that the world is a changed and better place because of the birth of the Lord Jesus.

God Love You,

-Father Peter
