Thank You, Thank You
Please accept my sincere word of thanks to all those who shared in the special celebration of the Sisters of Charity last weekend at the Milleridge Cottage. Receiving the Elizabeth Ann Seton Award was a special honor, having so many parishioners join me at this celebration lifted my heart and enliven my spirit. Thank You. -Father Peter

How is Jesus Present in the Eucharist?
Monday, December 6th - 7:30 PM - Upper Church
Rev. Joseph DeGroco, Associate Professor of Liturgy
Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, Huntington
There seems to be much misunderstanding in the Catholic community as to how Jesus is present in the Eucharist. Some will say that Jesus is physically present in the consecrated bread and wine, while others will insist Jesus is there only symbolically. This presentation will explore what the Church means when it says that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist.

Prayer for Peace
On Monday evening, November 29th at 7:30 PM, we will gather for an evening of prayer for peace in our world. The war in Iraq has continued and the efforts of the peace-keepers continue to be frustrated. Our military who seek to support the peace continue to be far from their families and friends and their loved ones continue to live in fear for their safety. And so we seek to come together in prayer for an end to war and terrorism and for peace in all lands and among all people. Father Paul Hurley, a Major in the US Army, one of the chaplains at the Military Academy at West Point and a graduate of West Point itself will preside and preach at the service. Let us come together on this evening to pray for peace.

In Your Prayers Remember the Sick
Patricia Birbiglia, Patti Fischer, Tom Bidell,

and all the sick of the parish.

Family Liturgy - Jesse Tree
The Family Liturgy Committee invites families who would like to learn the tradition behind the “Jesse Tree” as well as how to make one. On Friday, December 3rd, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the school cafeteria, we will be gathering for a special workshop and for prayer and fellowship too. The cost for this workshop is $3.00 per family or per “Jesse Tree”. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring scissors, colored pencils and a dessert or snack to share. Juice, coffee, hot chocolate and tea will be provided. Participation at this workshop is limited, so please sign-up after the 10:15 Mass, or at the rectory. In addition, information about the “Jesse Tree” will be available by request if you would like to bring this tradition into your own homes, but will not have the chance to attend the workshop. NOTE: Due to the cancellation of this event last year, those who signed up last year will be given first opportunity to participate this year.

A Season of Thanks
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Sisters of Charity, Halifax serving in the New York area. Our teaching ministry began in Brooklyn in 1924 and in September 193l we came to minister as teachers in St. Barnabas Parish. This past Sunday, the Sisters of Charity had a celebration dinner and fundraiser for their retirement and health care needs which was most successful. The people of this Parish have been outstanding in supporting our congregation over these many years and last Sunday was no exception! In addition to financial support, you were there in great numbers to honor our Pastor, Father Peter, as he accepted the Elizabeth Seton Award from our congregation for his service to the people of God in his ministry as a true shepherd and servant of the flock. On behalf of the Sisters of Charity, we, the event chairpersons, sincerely thank the wonderful people in this Parish who continue to support us. You are the BEST! Thank you all and we ask God to bless you for your generosity. -Sister Maryanne Fitzgerald and Sister William Noreen

Anointing of the Sick
The Sacrament of the Sick will be celebrated on Saturday, November 27th, after the 8:00 AM Mass. The anointing of the sick is a sacrament that strengthens those who are ill, facing surgery, those who are disabled and those in special need of God’s healing touch due to chronic physical difficulties. Those wishing to receive the sacrament should sit in the front rows of the church.

Ems, Lectors and Altar Servers
Please pick up your ministry schedules for December and January in the Altar Servers Sacristy after Mass today.

Advent Wreath Candles
Each year four beautiful candles form our Advent wreath. For a couple of years now we have offered them to be memorialized in memory or in honor of a particular person. If you would like to remember someone specially, the offering is $50 for each candle. To reserve one, please contact the rectory office at 785-0054.

Advent Vespers
These days, unless we force ourselves, there is really no time to prepare our hearts spiritually for Christmas, or even to find a moment of sanity in the weeks beforehand. This Advent, our Social Justice Committee offers us an opportunity to do both with Vespers on Sunday, December 5th at 7:30 PM in the church. This ancient evening prayer of our Church is a calming and peaceful way of focusing ourselves on Advent’s main event, the expectation of Jesus’ arrival, once more, in our hearts. This year the reflection will be given by Vincent Torti, a program developer for Good Samaritan Hospital, who has also taught Theology at two Catholic High Schools as well as scripture courses for adults. Please give yourself a gift this Advent, and join us in celebrating Advent the old fashioned way, with a prayer of joyful hope.

What’s Up, Up There?
Things are wrapping up. Several of the roofs are completed. You might think there is only one roof but actually the plans divide the project into nine roofs and right now five of the nine are completed. The limestone stains on the bell tower are removed. The work on the wheelchair ramp is beginning. The existing railings will be refurbished and re-anchored. One small project is the refurbishing of the area around the crucifix on the side of the Church. This should be completed in the weeks to come. The contractors are preparing punch lists so that the job may be approved and then the scaffolding will be removed.

November 21, 2005

My dear friends,

Today the words come easily as I express to you my thanks for the gift each and every parishioner is to this parish. While it would be impossible, I’d love to thank each of you individually for the ways in which you bring life and love to this community of faith. Were it not for the individual gifts of each, the face of the parish would not have the warmth and welcome that so many visitors mention.

This week as you gather with family and friends at your Thanksgiving table, remember the gratitude that your parish family has for you and whisper a prayer to the Lord for your fellow parishioners as you give thanks to God for your gifts.

Thanksgiving Day begins for the parish at the Table of the Lord. At the 6:30 and 9:30 AM Masses, the ultimate prayer of thanksgiving – the Eucharist – will be offered for each of you. Gather with us at these celebrations of the Eucharist and give thanks to God through his son, Jesus Christ.

As the pastor of the parish, I want to thank today the staff that surrounds me and works with you and with me in bringing to life the gifts that flourish in this parish. Pray for your staff! Thank God for your staff! Ask God’s blessing on your staff! They are remarkable people.

Hundreds – literally – of volunteers need to be thanked today too. Without the generous love of so many we would never be able to serve the needs of all. Thank you dear volunteers for all you do. You are a blessing and a gift.

The entire parish staff joins me in wishing each and every one of you and your families a Blessed Thanksgiving. May the gifts we each receive be shared with all.

Happy Thanksgiving!

God Love You

-Father Peter
