Day of Recollection
Wednesday, November 3rd
Join us for a day of prayer and reflection at St. Ignatius Retreat Center (Inisfada) in Manhasset. The day begins at 9:30 AM with coffee and fellowship. Fr. Gil will be the presenter. It follows with a presentation, quite prayer, luncheon and closes with a Eucharistic liturgy (ending at approximately 3:00 PM.) Suggested donation is $25. For reservations, please call Fr. Anthony at the rectory.

Altar Flowers
The flowers on the Blessed Mother’s Altar for this week are in loving memory of Gerard and Robert Trimboli from their family.

Remembering Your Loved Ones
Remember your deceased loved ones by enrolling them in the novena of masses and the prayers offered during the month of November. Envelopes to enroll them are found at the doors of the Church today. The Book of Remembrance will also be placed in the Sanctuary on November 1st when you can record those who have died. Those mentioned on the envelopes and in the Book of Remembrance will be remembered at each mass celebrated in the Church.

Leaves, Leaves, Leaves
Now that autumn is upon us many of us are busily raking the leaves that fall from all the beautiful trees we have on Long Island. For some of us raking is no longer something we are easily able to do. And so with the usual St. Barnabas generosity, Brownie Troop 949 is willing to rake some leaves for elderly parishioners who might need help at this time of the year. Please call the Outreach office at 785-6243 if you are in need of their services.

Bread & Wine
The Eucharistic bread and wine for this week is in memory of my son, Daniel Finn.

Rosary Society
Our regular monthly meeting will be held on Monday, November 8th at 8:00 PM in the school cafeteria. Special request - please bring any leftover Halloween candies (individually wrapped pieces only) to the meeting.

Parking Request
As you may have noticed the stripping in the parking lot was renewed this week. Once again, I’d ask people to respect the layout of cars and to park only in the spaces. Parishioners are also asked to respect the “Reserved Rectory Staff” and “Reserved Convent” spaces in the lot

Sanctuary Lamp
The Sanctuary Lamp Candle will be lit this week in memory of George Onufrey from the Caputo Family.

Second Collection
The second collection next week is for the repair of the Church roof.

Please Pray for the Repose of the Souls of the Recently Deceased
Joseph B. Mauro and Veronica Corliss

Food Pantry Weekend
November 6th & 7th
The St. Barnabas Food Pantry served over 50 households in the parish with food during October. Your generosity made this possible. This month we are most in need of cereal, jello, pudding, coffee, tea, mayonnaise, juices, macaroni & cheese, rice, tuna, chicken & vegetable soup, pasta sauce, peanut butter & jelly, pancake mix & syrup, dish & laundry detergent, soap, toothpaste & paper goods. Please leave your pantry donations on the lobby benches in church next weekend. We are also happy to accept them at the rectory during the week. The Ten-Minute Club also meets on Pantry Sunday. We’ll need you to take this month’s food donations over to the rectory basement. Please meet our St. Vincent de Paul Society members in the Church lobby after Mass. Your generous support of our Pantry, as always, is deeply appreciated. Thank you.

Catechetical Service Awards
“Go and teach all people my Gospel” Mt. 28:19
As a parish, we give thanks for the may men and women who so generously share their time and talent as teachers of the faith for our young people. These volunteers are among the many unsung heros of the parish community. On Thursday, October 14th, the Diocese of Rockville Centre recognized the following catechist for their outstanding years of service at their Catechetical Awards Ceremony. The St. Pius X Award for 10 years of service was awarded to: Mrs. Gerri Galvani, Mrs. Helen Jemmott, Mrs. Rita Maffeo, Ms. Alison Matera, Mrs. Patricia Memmer and Mr. Michael Parrilo. Mrs. Angela Ferrara received the Pope John XIII Award for 25 of service. Mrs. Mary Butler and Mrs. Toni D’Alto received the Bishop John R. McGann Award for 35 years of service. We as a parish salute these teachers for faithful commitment and tireless dedication to our parish children.

Father John Mahoney
Please remember in your prayers Father John Mahoney, the Capuchin priest who celebrated the Eucharist here for many years. Father was recently diagnosed with cancer of the liver. He lives in Beacon, New York with his religious community. Our prayers will certainly be a support.

Gobble, Gobble - Thanksgiving’s On Its Way
It’s hard to believe, but Thanksgiving is on the horizon, and in a few weeks, we’ll start our annual food collection for the needy. If you were used to donating a turkey, please think about giving a King Kullen coupon or gift certificate equal to the price of a turkey ($10), again this year That worked so well last Thanksgiving that we’re doing it again. Very, very, many of those we helped thanked us over and over for the opportunity to pick out their own turkey with the family; it gives them the dignity of shopping like everyone and choosing one that fits their particular needs. The gift certificates will also help us out at Outreach/St. Vincent de Paul as there is really no frozen storage for the birds.

What’s Up, Up There?
The other morning with the sun shinning brightly I said to the construction supervisor – “Great day for roof work.” His response, despite the fact that the temperature was 59 degrees was he prefers the warmer weather for work. I said, “Well, keep them working because many colder days are around the corner. I wouldn’t want to have to ask you to help me hang Christmas wreaths.” He just smiled and said “Keep praying Father.” That’s the work picture for the week.

October 31, 2004

My dear friends,

We celebrate special feasts of remembrance this week – the feast of All Saints and the feast of All Souls. In addition to these beautiful holy days a civic celebration coincides with them that we call Election Day. Let me spend a few moments on each.

All Saints Day: Ever since Jesus said to the apostles “Do this in memory of me” the gift of memory has been sacred to the Church. There are so many memories that we share as a Church that go back centuries – some of which we look upon with fondness and others that seem to be scars of a long life. Among the most precious memories are the people who have been the Church through more than two thousand years. On All Saints Day we celebrate the “holy ones” that inspired and continue to inspire us from above. Each of us has our favorite saints and some have people who were “saints” in their own lives and to whom we might well pray on a day like today.

While traditionally we come together at the Eucharistic table on this holy day, since it falls on a Monday, the Bishops of the United States have dispensed with the obligation of attending mass. Our memories of these holy ones could well be cherished on this day by sharing our stories of them with another person. Happy All Saints Day!

All Souls Day: One of the Eucharistic celebrations each year that touches me the most is coming together at the altar with the families and friends of those who have lost a family member during the past year. This mass celebrated at 7:30 PM on November 2nd gathers people of many emotions and feelings to pray for their loved one. The power of prayer fills the Church and the hearts of those attending. On this special holy day pray for those you knew and loved who now share a new life with God. Pray through their intercession that we all might find our way to the Lord by living lives of justice, mercy and peace. Happy All Souls Day!

Election Day: As a nation we are fortunate that our leaders are determined by the vote of the people. Many nations sadly do not enjoy this privilege. On Tuesday we will elect a president to carry the torch of leadership for the next four years. While there is a serious civil obligation to vote we can also be confident that we have a moral obligation to do all we can to preserve the gifts that we enjoy as a nation under God and conceived in liberty. With this bulletin you will find an informative brochure on our faithful citizenship. Please take a moment to review it. Happy Election Day!
Let us be a people of gratitude as we celebrate these days of remembrance.

God Love You,

-Father Peter
