September 11th Memorial Mass
Continuing our tradition of prayer and consolation for the families of those who were most closely affected by the tragedies of September 11th, 2001, we will have a memorial mass for the deceased on Saturday, September 11th at 11:00 AM. Please join us at this time praying for those who died on that day, for their families and for peace in our world.

Second Collection
The second collection next week is for the support of the National Catholic University.

Many, Many Thanks
Your generous support of our Back To School Collection was incredible. Your donations are being distributed, and dozens of needy children along with their families, are being helped. School supply bills these days are astronomical, and so is our clients’ appreciation. This year, as you know, we once again tried the “gift card idea”, and it worked like a charm, giving families the chance to get a lot more of the things that individual schools and teachers really require. The St. Vincent de Paul Society and Parish Outreach thank you from the bottom of their hearts!

Altar Flowers
The flowers on the Blessed Mother’s Altar for this week are in loving memory of Elaine Caggiano from her family.

Golden Wedding Jubilee
On Sunday, September 26th, couples married 50 years or more, who have not already been honored by the Bishop, are invited to receive a special blessing and certificate from His Excellency Paul Walsh, following the celebration of the Eucharist at Maria Regina Church, Seaford at 3:00 PM. Please pick up your registration card at the rectory, fill it out, and return to the Diocese no later than September 8th.

Please Pray for the Repose of the Souls of the Recently Deceased
Clotilde Pittelli, John S. Maiorana and Albert Kepko

Our Annual Investiture Mass will be held on Monday, October 4th, at 7:00 PM in the Church. Immediately after Mass, dinner will be held at the Knights of Columbus. Tickets are $21 per person. Please contact Barbara Merget at 221-1726 or Tecla Curcio at 781-0237 for reservations. Anyone wishing to be invested into the Rosary Society, please call Marie Scheibeler at 826-3974 or Stephanie DeVito at 868-0585.

Boy & Cub Scouts Car Wash
St. Barnabas Boy Scout Troop 580 and Cub Scout Pack 580 will have their annual Car Wash on Sunday, September 12th from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Bellmore Knights of Columbus. Please support the scouts by bringing us your cars. We appreciate any old towels you can donate also. Please bring them down to the car wash or call Debbie Marzigiliano at 316-0045 for pick-up before the 12th. The money raised helps defray the cost of the scouting program for the coming year. Both the Troop and Pack are active in the St. Barnabas community. Thank you for your support.

St. Barnabas Golf Outing
St. Barnabas will be holding its 3rd Annual Monsignor Potterton Memorial Golf Outing on Thursday, October 7th at the Lido Beach Golf Club. Monsignor loved to play golf and he loved his parish. Let’s help keep his memory alive by joining in this annual event. Many of you who are not golfers, and would like to share in this day, could do so by being a sponsor, donating a prize, attending the dinner or making a donation in his memory. For further information, contact the rectory office. Thank you for your support.

Office of Christian Formation
We are currently assigning our students in our parish Christian formation program (religious education) into classes for the upcoming school year. It has come to our attention that we are in need of special needs catechists or teachers for some of the children in our program who might present some learning difficulties. We invite parishioners who have experience working with special needs children to consider teaching religion to some of these children on a one to one basis or in a small classroom setting. We also need catechists and hall monitors for grades 2-8. If you can share an hour a week monitoring the hallways or teaching the faith to a small group of children, please call the OCF at 785-0130. We appreciate your assistance and support.

Bread & Wine
The Eucharistic bread and wine for this week is in loving memory of Theresa Zloklikovits from the Kobulnick Family.

Food Pantry Weekend
September 4th & 5th
This month we are most in need of coffee, tea, rice, soups (chicken & vegetable), canned fruit, juice, pancake syrup, cereal, laundry detergent, and paper goods, but all donations are gratefully accepted. Please leave your pantry donations on the lobby benches in church next weekend. We are also happy to accept them in the rectory during the week. The Ten-Minute Club also meets on Pantry Sunday. We’ll need you to take this month’s food donations over to the rectory basement. Please meet our St. Vincent de Paul Society members in the Church lobby after Mass. Your generous support of our Pantry, as always, is deeply appreciated. Thank you so much.

“For every one who exalts himself will be humbled,
but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 14:11

Our readings today speak about the importance of humility, not a false humility, but an honest humility; one that is not overly inflated with self-importance, but also one that is not self-effacing. This little quip may hit home with respect to the former.

A Sunday school teacher asked her children, as they were on the way to church service, "And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?" One bright little girl replied, "Because people are sleeping." Gee, I would have thought it was for the brilliant homilies. Which just goes to show, if you don’t want an honest answer, don’t ask a child! But if you want to remain humble, then definitely ask a child.

In the first reading from Sirach the author gives us excellent advice with regard to true humility. “My child, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts. Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God. What is too sublime for you, seek not, into things beyond your strength search not.”

True humility is what I would consider a healthy self-esteem, because true humility recognizes one’s gifts, accepts them as God given and uses them to the best of one’s ability. A person with true humility does not try to be someone he or she is not meant to be (‘What is too sublime for you, seek not, into things beyond your strength, search not’), but uses one’s gifts and talents, whatever they may be, and is proud of them. True humility recognizes what one is good at and is happy performing those tasks. It may seek things that are beyond one’s current abilities in order to try and improve, but it also recognizes that it has a long way to go and understands that it will take time to improve and doesn’t seek instant praise, but accepts honest criticism and encouragement.

True humility doesn’t seek approval nor does it seek constant reassurance, but knows in one’s heart when a job was well done. It also doesn’t play down one’s gifts in a self-effacing way, but responds positively to praise that is well deserved. It doesn’t seek praise, but accepts it graciously when received.

For some reason our Catholic tradition often led to self-effacing ways which did not build healthy self-esteem, but the author of Sirach and the words from today’s gospel according to Luke offer good advice for both true humility and a healthy self-esteem. Know who you are, be who you are and be proud of who you are. Don’t seek to be first at any cost, but when a job is well done, whatever it may be, be proud of it, give thanks to God and if you should be ‘offered a better seat,’ rejoice and be glad.

One last quip: With regard to a healthy self esteem, all of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism. Have a great week and spend a little time doing something special with your gifts and talents.

-Father Gil
