Many, Many Thanks
Your generous support of our Back To School Collection was incredible. Your donations are being distributed, and dozens of needy children along with their families, are being helped. School supply bills these days are astronomical, and so is our clients’ appreciation. This year, as you know, we once again tried the “gift card idea”, and it worked like a charm, giving families the chance to get a lot more of the things that individual schools and teachers really require. The St. Vincent de Paul Society and Parish Outreach thank you from the bottom of their hearts!

Golden Wedding Jubilee
On Sunday, September 26th, couples married 50 years or more, who have not already been honored by the Bishop, are invited to receive a special blessing and certificate from His Excellency Paul Walsh, following the celebration of the Eucharist at Maria Regina Church, Seaford at 3:00 PM. Please pick up your registration card at the rectory, fill it out, and return to the Diocese no later than September 8th.

Considering Catholicism?
If you , or someone you know, might be interested in pursuing full membership in the Catholic Church, now is the time to contact us. Classes are now forming for September. RCIA is intended for adults in any of three categories: (1) those who have never been baptized; (2) those who are already baptized Christians of another denomination; and (3) Catholics who have never had the opportunity to receive Communion and/or Confirmation. If interested, please leave a message at the rectory for Terry Hubert

Observations From a Doctor’s Office

A few weeks ago, while sitting in a doctor’s office waiting for my allergy shot, I couldn’t help noticing a father with his three young daughters. I would guess they were about 8, 5 and 1 ½ years old. There weren’t enough seats for them to all sit together so the two older girls were quietly reading in one part of the room, while the father was holding and playing with the baby on the other side of the room. Throughout the time the two older girls were perfectly behaved. Eventually the middle girl came over to her father and a woman with her own children moved over one seat so the 5 year old could sit next to her father. The father told her to say thank you and with a little coaxing (due to being shy) she did. Soon after, the baby seemed to want to go to her 5 year old sister, so the father put her down and she approached her indicating that she wanted to sit on her lap. Now, the 5 year old says to the baby, “Say please.” And the baby responds, “Peas.” Not bad, I thought. It was so nice to see that old values were not dead.

In our second reading this week, taken from the letter to the Hebrews, we hear these words, “For what ‘son’ is there whom his father does not discipline? At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.” The author of this letter is comparing how fathers (mothers) deal with their children and what was understood at the time as the way God deals with us. In actuality, God does not reprove us per se. In reality our lived experiences are then attributed to God. However, it does express the need for human discipline, without which we will become more like animals than humans.

Unfortunately, many of us are so sensitive to any form of discipline that we often react negatively to such correction; whether it is in regard to children and everyday manners, children and the need for more severe discipline, or just showing someone a better way to do something. Depending on how sensitive we are, the discipline we receive may be taken as anything from welcomed to a personal affront. This section of the letter expresses the importance of ‘parental correction’ or any kind of ‘helpful correction’ and how, when we are open to it, we can become better for it in the long run.

For sure, children need to be disciplined, and whenever we either discipline or just correct someone, if it is done in a loving and caring way, it can be the cause for joy. We can all gain from both disciplining and being disciplined if appropriately done and as the letter says, “it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.” As we go through the coming week, maybe we could spend some time reflecting on these words so that we will both welcome helpful criticism and not be afraid to discipline children when necessary. Here’s wishing all a peaceful and joy filled week.

-Father Gil
