Please join us at this time praying for those who died on that day, for their families and for peace in our world.
St. Barnabas Golf Outing
St. Barnabas will be holding its 3rd Annual Monsignor Potterton Memorial Golf Outing on Thursday, October 7th at the Lido Beach Golf Club. Monsignor loved to play golf and he loved his parish. Let’s help keep his memory alive by joining in this annual event. Many of you who are not golfers, and would like to share in this day, could do so by being a sponsor, donating a prize, attending the dinner or making a donation in his memory. For further information, contact the rectory office. Thank you for your support.

School Days...School Daze
For many years, the Back-To-School Collection has been a summer tradition at St. Barnabas and so we are doing it again. Because all schools and teachers have a dizzying array of requirements, $5 & $10 gift cards for any place that sells school supplies (CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreen, K-Mart, Wal*Mart, Staples, Office Max, etc.) are really the easiest and best, but the usual supplies are also welcome. Leave your donations on the lobby benches in church, or drop them (especially the gift cards) at the rectory by August 17th. Thanks very much for your help. It will be a big boost to many, needy families, and your generosity is deeply appreciated.

Dear Friends at St. Barnabas,
For a number of years now I have come to this good parish from my native land of Nigeria where I minister at St. Theresa’s Minor Seminary. This seminary was established by the Irish Missionaries in 1900 to prepare students for the priesthood. The Seminary consists of two buildings that provide housing for the seminarians, two classroom buildings, a chapel, a rectory, the students’ dining room, and auditorium and quarters for the staff.
Currently there are 330 students enrolled in the school with 21 teachers, 3 priests and 12 domestic workers. The school tuition of $400 a session provides for some of the needs of the seminary but certainly not all of them. Raising tuition is almost impossible because the students come from poor families where their income is less than $1.00 a day.
Presently the buildings need much work. Most are old and the needed maintenance could not be done due to the expense. With Father Peter’s permission I come to you to ask your support for our seminary. Vocations will be lost if we cannot maintain these buildings and offer these young men a seminary education.
On August 22nd, I will speak at the masses to ask your support. A second collection will be taken to support St. Theresa’s. Before we even take the collection I want to thank you for your kindness and generosity.
For those who might want to support in another manner, I will also offer hand-crafted Christmas cards that are made in my native Nigeria. These cards will be offered to those who want them for a free will donation. I will be in the lobby of the Church with these Christmas cards.
I look forward to speaking with you on August 22nd. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.
-Father Lawrence jk
While the Pastor is Away, the Associates Will Play
The good thing about not being the pastor is that you don’t have to write letters for the bulletins. The bad thing about not being pastor is that the pastor can still tell you to write letters for the bulletin; and since Fr. Anthony was away when Fr. Peter began his vacation that left yours truly.
But before he left, Fr. Peter left me strict instructions make sure the Church and rectory are still here when he gets back. I had thought about trying to sell them while he was away, but I guess that is out of the question. Although he didn’t say anything about the school or convent…hmm! Oh well, enough of that.
This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. We do not know when Mary was actually assumed into heaven, nor do we know when the Church first began to celebrate this feast day. However, we know that from the earliest days of the Church the tradition has been that Mary, “preserved from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory…” One of the important aspects of this feast is that, “The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians” (CCC 966).
The following, taken from the website:
http://www.cptryon.org/compassion/mary/trad09.html, gives a brief history of the feast and ends with part of a homily from the 7th century, which serves as a good reflection for us all.
“By the year 600, a feast called the Dormition of Mary, honoring her death and assumption into heaven, was celebrated in Jerusalem and in the churches of the East. Some centuries later it would pass into the Western churches known as the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. One of the first churches in Christendom dedicated to Mary was built over her tomb near Gethsemane around 400 A.D. Today, a church still marks this site in Jerusalem. In the 7th century, Theothekno, bishop of Palestine, preached a homily on the feast of Mary's Assumption, August 15: Rejoice with the Mother of God, with angels and saints, and celebrate this great feast: the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. On earth she was a fruitful virgin, in heaven she intercedes for all; through this blessed woman, the Spirit's gifts still flow upon us, and her words teach gentle wisdom. At her assent the earth blossomed; she sought good things for the poor. Now in heaven her care is undiminished, near her Son she seeks the good of us all."
The Feast of the Assumption reminds us that our final home is in heaven and that Mary watches over all of us. May this day be the start of a great week for all of you!
-Father Gil
