What’s Up, Up There?
This week’s dilemma has been rain. With the number of storms we had, we knew it would happen and it has—rain has come through and so our contractors were busy hunting for the cause of these leaks. If the rain keeps up we should be well prepared for any occurrence since every possible leak will be pursued. In the meantime the tiles continue to be put in place and the gutters that will be installed are being fabricated.

School Days...School Daze
They’re a way’s off, but they’re coming fast! Before you know it, those school bells will be ringing again (sorry, kids), and the need for start-up school supplies will once more rear its expensive head. For many years, the Back-To-School Collection has been a summer tradition at St. Barnabas and so we’ll be doing it again injust a few weeks.. Because all schools and teachers have a dizzying array of requirements, $5 & $10 gift cards for any place that sells school supplies (CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreen, K-Mart, Wal*Mart, Staples, Office Max, etc.) are really the easiest and best, but the usual supplies are also welcome. Leave your donations on the lobby benches in church next weekend, or drop them (especially the gift cards) at the rectory by August 17th. Thanks very much for your help. It will be a big boost to many, needy families, and your generosity is deeply appreciated.

Volunteer Registration
Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who have completed the necessary volunteer registration forms. To make it easier for those who still need to complete their forms, members of the parish staff will be available in the Holy Family Chapel on August 14th and 15th after the following Masses:

August 14th 5:00 PM & 7:30 PM
August 15th 7:00, 9:00, 10:30 AM & 12 Noon

Please take advantage of this opportunity to complete the mandated forms. Thank you.

Retrouvaille - September 10th-12th
Retrouvaille is a program for marriages that are in trouble. It offers a lifeline to couples suffering with relationship problems. No group discussions. It will help you rediscover each other, examine your life and learn to communicate more effectively. Six post-weekend sessions provide continued support. The next weekend will be at Montfort Retreat House in Bay Shore For information call 1-800-470-2230.

Charismatic Renewal Center
The Diocesan Office of Charismatic Renewal will sponsor an evening of Prayer and Praise on Monday, August 9th, at 8:00 PM in the Holy Family Chapel. The Messianic Jewish Community, “Shaaret HaShamyim” will lead this evening of praise, worship, music and witness. Everyone is welcome. For further information, call 631-952-7400.

My Dear Friends at St. Barnabas Parish,

Three weeks have come and gone so fast. Many of you will know, I came here this summer more than a week later then I had originally planned. Sadly, my mother went to the Lord on July 5th at the great age of 94. She had been in reasonable good health but after a stroke on June 30th she only lived another few days. It was therefore somewhat unexpected and so a great sadness for my sister, my two brothers and I despite her wonderful long life. Mum, after all, is always Mum, whatever the years.

After the funeral was over, I wondered if I should travel at all. It was very hard to know what was the right thing to do! Having spent the last three weeks here, I know now it was definitely good to come.

Firstly, I want to thank Fr. Peter for his kindness and understanding during my stay. It was especially thoughtful of him to find a slot in the schedule of Masses on Saturday, July 24th when I could offer Holy Mass here at St. Barnabas for my Mum. Then, Fr. Gil, Fr. Ed, Fr. Lawrence and all the staff at the Rectory have been so kind and supportive over these three weeks.

Finally, but so importantly, you, the good people of St. Barnabas Parish, have received me with such wonderful warmth, with words of sympathy, your friendship and your promises of prayers for my mother, for me and for the family.

As some of you will know I have an Aunt and many cousins living the New York area and it was good to meet them too as, of course, they were not able to come to Dublin for the funeral.

I arrived with a heavy heart but I leave for Dublin and home with my spirit lifted and very much rested because of your goodness. I am deeply grateful and I promise to remember all of you in my few humble prayers.

May the Good Lord grant Eternal Peace to my mother, Kathleen Noone, and may He reward all of you for your kindness.

Hopefully, I may be able to come again next Summer. In the meantime, God Bless you and take care.

-Father Martin

Dear Friends at St. Barnabas,

For a number of years now I have come to this good parish from my native land of Nigeria where I minister at St. Theresa’s Minor Seminary. This seminary was established by the Irish Missionaries in 1900 to prepare students for the priesthood. The Seminary consists of two buildings that provide housing for the seminarians, two classroom buildings, a chapel, a rectory, the students’ dining room, and auditorium and quarters for the staff.

Currently there are 330 students enrolled in the school with 21 teachers, 3 priests and 12 domestic workers. The school tuition of $400 a session provides for some of the needs of the seminary but certainly not all of them. Raising tuition is almost impossible because the students come from poor families where their income is less than $1.00 a day.

Presently the buildings need much work. Most are old and the needed maintenance could not be done due to the expense. With Father Peter’s permission I come to you to ask your support for our seminary. Vocations will be lost if we cannot maintain these buildings and offer these young men a seminary education.

On August 22nd, I will speak at the masses to ask your support. A second collection will be taken to support St. Theresa’s. Before we even take the collection I want to thank you for your kindness and generosity.

For those who might want to support in another manner, I will also offer hand-crafted Christmas cards that are made in my native Nigeria. These cards will be offered to those who want them for a free will donation. I will be in the lobby of the Church with these Christmas cards.

I look forward to speaking with you on August 22nd. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

-Father Lawrence

A Letter from the Pastor - August 8, 2004

My dear friends,

Two staff members will be leaving us for new ministries during the month of August. It is with confidence that I speak for the entire parish when I thank them for their years of service.

Farewell to Brother Padraic
This weekend Brother Padraic completes his ministry here at St. Barnabas. For the past two years he has served as the Director of Parish Outreach working closely with the St. Vincent DePaul Society caring for the many people who come for help and assistance. Brother Padraic has been a gift to the parish and as we wish him “God’s speed” we also thank him for his dedicated service and his care for the people he served, always in the Franciscan spirit. The Parish Staff joins me in thanking Brother Padraic for sharing in the ministry to the parish with us and we all promise him our prayers in the days to come as he begins a program of studies on spiritual direction and a sabbatical program. Thank you and God bless you, Brother Padraic.

Farewell to Cristina Varriale
Coming to us right after her graduation from college, Cristina began her ministry in the Church here at St. Barnabas. As the Director of Youth Ministry, Cristina brought together our teenagers from the 8th grade through the end of high school. Whether it was a quiet night in the youth center, a pizza party, a ski trip or gathering around altar at the 5:00 PM mass, the young people of our parish grew in faith and in care for one another. Cristina also spearheaded our Confirmation program last year preparing our 8th graders for the reception of this sacrament. Her enthusiasm, love for the young, and willingness to share her gifts won the hearts of many of our teens. They will certainly miss her. Cristina is moving on to a new ministry that of Campus Minister at St. John’s Prep in Astoria, New York. Undoubtedly the young people in this high school will find a wonderful Christian whose care for them will be without measure. Thanks so much Cristina for sharing your gifts with us. May God bless you as you continue your journey.

In an earlier letter I mentioned that Margaret Pariseau will be taking up the work of Brother Padraic and assuming the position of Director of Parish Outreach. Deacon Bernie Sherlock will assume Margaret Pariseau’s responsibilities in the religious education office once again serving as one of our Directors of Religious Education. And I am happy to announce the Mrs. Linda Rhodes will assume the position of Youth Minister and so continue the fine work begun by Cristina.

May our prayers accompany each of these people as they seek to minister to the people of the Church.

God Love You,
-Father Peter
