What’s Up, Up There?
There’s lots of banging of hammers going on as the slow process of placing slate tiles continues. Of course the rain has stopped the work day on several occasions and we do have several funerals each week when we have to ask the workers to take a break.

Volunteer Registration
Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who have completed the necessary volunteer registration forms. To make it easier for those who still need to complete their forms, members of the parish staff will be available in the Holy Family Chapel on August 14th and 15th after the following Masses:

August 14th 5:00 PM & 7:30 PM
August 15th 7:00, 9:00, 10:30 AM & 12 Noon

Please take advantage of this opportunity to complete the mandated forms. Thank you.

Saturday, November 20th–Sunday, November 21st

The Vocation Office for the Diocese of Rockville Centre is sponsoring a High School Vocation Retreat Weekend. For further information, please contact the Vocation Office at 631-424-9888 or e-mail Vocations@drvc.org

Discipleship
The call of the disciples is so familiar to us that we tend to miss the wonder of the disciples’ response, which was immediate and complete; they leave everything and follow Jesus. Can we do less if we feel that God is calling us to the priesthood or consecrated life? If you think God is calling you, contact the Vocations Office.

School Days...School Daze
They’re a way’s off, but they’re coming fast! Before you know it, those school bells will be ringing again (sorry, kids), and the need for start-up school supplies will once more rear its expensive head. For many years, the Back-To-School Collection has been a summer tradition at St. Barnabas and so we’ll be doing it again in just a few weeks. Because all schools and teachers have a dizzying array of requirements, $5 & $10 gift cards for any place that sells school supplies (CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreen, K-Mart, Wal*Mart, Staples, Office Max, etc.) are really the easiest and best, but the usual supplies are also welcome. Just leave your donations on the lobby benches in church on the weekend of August 14th & 15th, or drop them (especially the gift cards) at the rectory by August 17th. Thanks very much for your help with all this. It will be a big boost to many, needy families, and your generosity is deeply appreciated.

Registrations are still being accepted for our parish children’s Christian Formation program. Help Urgently Needed
We are currently assigning our students in our parish Christian formation program (religious education) into classes for the upcoming school year. It has come to our attention that we are in need of special needs catechists or teachers for some of the children in our program who might present some learning difficulties. We invite parishioners who have experience working with special needs children to consider teaching religious to some of these children whether on a one to one basis or in a small classroom setting. We are also in need of catechists and hall monitors for grades 2-8. If you can share an hour a week monitoring the hallways or teaching the faith to a small group of children, please call the OCF at 785-0130. Your assistance in this most important endeavor is very much needed and appreciated.

It takes as little as an hour a week to make a difference in a young woman’s life. For further information on becoming a Mentor, please call Margaret Hogan at 223-7888.

A Letter from the Pastor - August 1, 2004

My dear friends,

During the past several weeks members of the staff have offered many meetings for volunteers in the parish to assist them in completing the volunteer registration forms and the release form for a criminal background check. So many of you have been more than ready to complete these forms and have attended the meetings so that we can process them.

The most repeated question concerns the sharing of your social security number with us. The only reason this number is requested is that we need it to process the criminal background check. Please be assured that we will keep this number confidential. Your social security number, along with your name and address are submitted to a firm that does this check. Only the pastor is informed if there is any information that arises through this background check. I will personally be in contact with you should something arise.

Some people have indicated that they are not willing to provide their social security number and thus making it impossible for us to complete the required background check. Sadly the diocese has mandated that those who fail to submit the required forms will not be permitted to volunteer for parish activities. Each of the staff members hopes that those finding it difficult to provide their social security number will do so and thus continue as a volunteer in the parish.

On the weekend of August 14th - 15th, meetings have been scheduled for after the masses. We encourage all volunteers who have not yet competed the new registration process to please attend one of these meetings.

Once again, I thank you for your understanding concerning this process. If you have any questions about this, please don’t hesitate to contact me or one of the members of the staff. We all hope that all our efforts will make our parish stronger and more committed to one another’s welfare.

God Love You,
-Father Peter
