The poor, whom Jesus said will always be among us, are very grateful for the generosity of St. Barnabas month after month. This month we have had so many requests for food that our cupboard is pretty empty… If you can help it will be most appreciated. We are most in need of cereal, coffee, tea, rice, canned fruit, juice, pancake mix & syrup, pasta sauce, personal care items, laundry detergent and paper goods but all donations are gratefully accepted. Please leave your pantry donations on the lobby benches in church next weekend. We are also happy to accept them at the rectory during the week. The Ten-Minute Club also meets on Pantry Sunday. We’ll need you to take this month’s food donations over to the rectory basement. Please meet our Saint Vincent de Paul Society members in the church lobby after Mass. Your generous support of our Pantry, as always, is deeply appreciated. Thank you so much.

May 29, 2005

My dear friends,

Today we celebrate the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ or as it was referred to for many years the Feast of Corpus Christi. Although we gather on a daily basis for the Eucharist, we gather today in festive celebration of this wonderful gift of the Lord to each of us – his presence in the bread and wine that becomes our food for our journey through life. It seems to me that if you surveyed Catholics throughout the world about the gifts God has shared with all of us, many would list this gift among the most special we possess. Hopefully our devotion to the Eucharist will only increase as a result of our sharing in the celebration of mass today.

From time to time it is important to recall too the practices in which we share that have to do with the Eucharist.

· As Catholics we reverence the Lord’s presence in the reserved sacrament (in the tabernacle) by genuflecting when we enter and leave the Church. This ancient gesture articulates the gratitude we have in our hearts for this gracious gift of God.

· The Eucharist is primarily our food for life. Privileged as we are to share in this food, it is important that we remember the manner in which we receive this sacrament. Generally as we approach the minister to receive we bow our head reverently before we receive. As we receive we either place one hand upon the other to receive the sacred host in our hands or extend our tongue to receive the host in our mouths. Either gesture expresses our respect for the Lord. Customs not encouraged by the Church include genuflecting before receiving the Eucharist or reaching out with our fingers to take the host with our fingers from the minister rather than receive it in our palms.

· While many receive the precious blood, many unnecessarily fear the communication of germs. Research has demonstrated that this fear is unfounded. As we celebrate this feast it might be a good time for you to take up the gift of receiving the Lord under both the form of bread and wine.

· As Catholics we are always encouraged to spend time in prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in our parish church. From time to time we also reverence the Eucharist through exposition and benediction and monthly have Nocturnal Adoration as ways to remember this wonderful gift of the Lord.

The feast today suggests we renew our respect, our reverence and our remembrance of the great gift of God to each of us. As a community let us redouble our efforts to increase our reverence for the Eucharist by reverencing the gift of Jesus in each person you meet and renew our devotion to the presence of Jesus under the signs of bread and wine.

God Love You

-Father Peter
