Pray for your Priests
Let us as a parish remember those who have shared their life with us in the ordained ministry over the years. Our prayers will certainly be a support to them.

Father Edward Muhs – 54 years on June 9th
Deacon Bernie Sherlock – 25 years on May 31st
Deacon Thomas Coleman – 16 years on May 13th
Father Anthony Iaconis – 8 years on June 14th
Father Gil Lap – 2 years on June 14th

In this time of crisis for the ordained ministries and with so few vocations to these ministries, offering our prayerful support is most necessary.

Caregivers’ Support
Do you provide care for a senior? Have you felt the frustration, exasperation and even guilt while caring for a loved one? You are not alone! A free caregivers’ support group is available to provide encouragement and information. This group is hosted by a licensed social worker, and sponsored by Nassau County Dept. of Senior Citizens Affairs and Catholic Charities. For information, call Margaret at the Outreach Office at 785-6243.

Many Thanks
On behalf of Birthright, Momma’s House and Life Center, our Outreach Office thanks you for the wonderful response made to our annual Mothers’ Day Baby Shower last weekend. Many, many beautiful baby items were delivered to each of the agencies this past week, just in time for Mothers’ Day. The gifts for the Moms were a big hit. You brought a lot of joy into many lives this Mothers’ Day...God Bless your kindness and that generous St. Barnabas spirit.

Join us at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School sharing in the tradition of excellence that has made it a happy home for so many of our parishioners. Catholic Ministries Appeal
Goal: $101,600
Pledges Received: $ 85,085

Recently a mailing was sent to parishioners who supported the Catholic Ministries Appeal who have not participated in this year’s appeal. Thankfully many have chosen to send in pledges and donations and we continue to climb closer to our goal. Currently we need $16,515 to meet our goal. Together we can achieve this. If you’re not sure how to make a pledge, just call the rectory. Hopefully this final effort will bring us over the goal and we will reap the benefits of being one of the parishes that actually makes it goal. Your generosity is always appreciated.

May 8, 2005

My dear friends,

Parish life during the month of May is surrounded by the celebration of the sacraments with the young people of our parish. 290 second graders will receive the Eucharist for the first time and 265 will receive the gift of the Spirit in Confirmation on May 18th.

With so many young people receiving the sacraments, we cannot help but think of the spiritual formation of these youngsters and thank those involved with it. The first and primary spiritual formers of our children are their parents, charged as they are with this on the day of their child’s baptism. Today we thank the parents for their loving care of their children. Supporting the parents in their task are the many catechists who teach weekly in our Christian Formation program. With almost 150 parishioners involved in this ministry, we certainly have a large group of people to whom we must express our thanks at this time. Guiding our catechists are the members of our staff who direct our program: Mrs. Rosemary Pettei and Deacon Bernie Sherlock. The task that they have is immense and seems to grow each year. To our Co-Directors we express heartfelt thanks today.

As we witness and share in the celebration of First Eucharist and Confirmation, let us pray for the children that the Lord will bless them and guide them in the ways of the Christian faith, and let us pray to the Lord in gratitude for their parents, their teachers and the parish staff.

This is a time in our Church when we need the support of so many to fulfill the spiritual formation of our people. Recently the New York Times ran an article with some statistics that point to the fact that we will need the loving service of our lay women and men to keep up the formation of our young. The Times mentioned that since 1978 in the Diocese of Rockville Centre we have 34% fewer active priests (256 priests serving 134 parishes) whose average age has climbed from 52 to 63. The number of seminarians in the 10 seminaries in the New York area has gone down from 2,072 in 1977 to 533 currently. In other words, without the help of our committed lay Catholics, we will not be serving well the People of God.

As we pray for our young people, let us pray for our Church that under the guidance of our new Pope Benedict XVI we might experience a new renewal in our Church.

God Love You

-Father Peter
