May 1, 2005

My dear friends,

During the coming week we begin the month of May initiating again a month of prayer to Mary the Mother of the Church who models for us the faith and love of an apostle. Who of us is not inspired by her role in the life of her son? As the woman whose love surrounded the person and life of Jesus, we cannot help but admire her response to the wonderful moments and the pained filled experiences of the life of her son. It is the faith of Mary that we struggle to understand and imitate during this Easter season.

While a relatively few people attend daily mass and are exposed to the wonderful readings of the Easter season, the beauty of these readings is exposed to us the life of early Church as they struggled to find meaning in their horrendous experience of the death of Jesus. What kept them going (and I suspect keeps all of us going in similar times), was their growing belief that Jesus by his death on the cross won for us salvation and eternal life.

Who of us hasn’t been consoled by the fact that we and all those we love have been promised eternal life with the Lord? Imagine if this were not a reality! Imagine how we would feel at the death of someone we love if weren’t consoled by the fact that those who have died have entered into a new and wonderful life with the Lord Jesus. How sad and empty our hearts would be without our sure faith in eternal life.

Our Easter season is a time to renew one’s faith in eternal life. Listen carefully to the consoling words of Jesus. Reflect on the words of Saint Paul in the Epistles and Saint Luke in the Acts of the Apostles and know the faith of others. Allow this mystery to wash over you and believe that you will rise to new life. Believe that those who have gone before us share in eternal life. Be grateful for such a wonderful gift from the Lord Jesus and live the Easter mystery in its fullness.

God Love You

-Father Peter
