We would like to invite those who are Catholic adults and have not received Confirmation to join us for three evenings: April 15th, May 2nd and May 9th at 8:00 PM. We will celebrate the Sacrament on Pentecost Sunday, May 15th. Please contact Fr. Anthony at the rectory for more information. As a parish we continue to struggle to reach our goal. During the coming weeks, we will be writing to those who have contributed in the past to our campaign and who have not shared in the appeal this year. Hopefully through this latest effort we will come closer to our goal and perhaps reap the benefits of being one of the parishes that actually makes their goal. Your generosity is most appreciated.

Make this Mothers’ Day even more special by supporting our annual Mothers’ Day Baby Shower for Birthright, Momma’s House and the Life Center. Just leave your donations on the lobby benches in our church vestibule. Should you forget, we can also accept them at the rectory until Tuesday, May 3rd. Toys ‘R Us gift cards, pampers, blankets and baby clothes (up to toddler size 4T) would be ideal. Of course layettes are always welcome. This year we will also accept small gifts for the Moms. Gifts the Moms would love include disposable cameras (to take pictures of the babies), picture frames, toiletries, metro cards (most do not have cars), and of course gift certificates. Aside from the help it will be to dozens of Moms who don’t have the money for these things, our little “shower” during her month is also a beautiful way to honor Mary, our Blessed Mother, who loves and cares for us all. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.

The Suffering of the Sudanese
The people of the Sudan have been victims of horrible atrocities during the past months and to be honest for years. A voluntary collection to offer them support will be taken at the doors of the Church on Sunday, April 24th at all the weekend masses. Your support and generosity are most appreciated.

April 17, 2005

My dear friends,

After a papacy of 27 years many people don’t remember much about a Conclave – the meeting of the College of Cardinals to elect a new pope. While our media has tried valiantly to provide us with all the details, perhaps a few thoughts might be helpful.

First of all, let the days ahead be a time of prayer for all of us. The Conclave will open with the singing of the Veni Sancte Spiritus, that is, the Come Holy Spirit. All of us need to beseech God’s Holy Spirit to come upon us and guide the minds and hearts of the Cardinal electors. During the past few years we have all become more aware of the humanity of the Church and as we enter into this election process we are abundantly aware that it is human beings with their limitations and strengths that will elect the human person who will lead our Church for many years to come (God willing). And so, let us ask the Holy Spirit to be with the Cardinals and let us ask God to guide our Church along a new road to life.

Secondly, the process that is called the conclave is basically only a meeting at which the participants talk about what is needed for and who would best lead our Church as we proceed into the new millennium. As you can imagine, amid the prayers and petitions there will be politicking and cajoling as people work to get votes for their candidate. (No one ever campaigns for themselves.) Like all human organizations there is much behind-the-scenes activity. It will be however through voting that directions will be established and decisions made. Rarely is a pontiff elected after a single vote. Often it will take three to four days for the minds of the gathered Cardinals to come to consensus on a candidate. The failure of the early votes is signaled to the waiting world by black smoke arising from a makeshift chimney over the Sistine Chapel. However cheers will echo through the colonnades of St. Peter’s when white smoke billows forth and the news will resound throughout the world once it is first seen. For once the white smoke billows, we will have a new pope.

Some conclaves take time. The longest was a three year conclave from 1268-1271. In order to get the cardinals moving, they served them only bread and water. Needless to say, this helped them to make up their mind.

As we watch with the world for white smoke to arise, let our prayers arise like the incense we burn to the Lord asking him to guide well our Cardinals so that our Church would have the best Father possible for the years to come.

God Love You

-Father Peter
