April 10, 2005

My dear friends,

With the simple words “Our Holy Father has returned to the house of his Father” the news of the death of our Holy Father Pope John Paul II was announced to the world. These simple words of sad news invited us to enter into the life and death of our Holy Father and at the same time to enter into the mystery of Christ’s life and death which is so much a part of our Easter celebration. Thankfully the faith of Our Holy Father makes it easier for us to believe that what we celebrate in this Easter season – the gift of new life that is ours through Jesus’ resurrection will certainly be that of our Holy Father.

The first words of our reading last Sunday reflect for me so well the life of our Holy Father…..

He devoted himself to the teaching of the apostles, to the communal life and to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers.

These beautiful words from the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostle could well be a summary of our Pontiff’s life.

Since the news of his death we have all been inundated with memories of his life; each commentator, each Church official, each passerby in a Cathedral, shared with us their thoughts and memories.

Personally in thinking about the Pope a few things come to my mind today that I’d like to share with you as remembrances of his life.

Upon becoming Pope, he chose as his motto TOTUS TUUS….which roughly translated means I’M ALL YOURS! As we look back on 27 years of his papacy and the 84 years of his life, we can say now, he meant it. He gave his all for us no matter what it demanded. Somehow or other I think this motto contains a lesson for each of us. No matter what our calling in life, no matter what our vocation – we are called like the Pope to say “I’m all yours.”

As I look at this man and his life, the thing that strikes me about him is that he was an immense person….not in the sense of size but stature. There are few people in this world of his stature whether one is speaking of those within the Church or in our world. His humility, his sense of justice for all people, his commitment to the Gospel, his openness to the variety of people that are in the world, all of these qualities reflect the stature of the man – he was larger than life. I think he would have had a good laugh if he realized that Fox news had announced he was dead a full day before he died. Yes, he even had a good sense of humor.

He loved people – especially young people. One of the little details revealed through the endless radio and television coverage that was intriguing was that as a Bishop in Poland he used to chat from his window with the people in the square outside his residence for endless hours on many an evening about all that was going on. He loved to chat with the young, to hear their thoughts, to challenge their ideas, and to express his love for them in endless ways. As the Holy Father he told us that the young are not the future of the Church – they are the Church. If only we would really believe that the young are the Church a lot would be very different.

One of the phrases that surrounded his life was he was the title “The Pilgrim Pope.” Yes, he traveled and visited endless people. As a pilgrim he was on pilgrimage – always hoping to pray with others and understand the lives of others. Who of us doesn’t have endless images in our minds of this man wandering the globe, kissing the ground on which his plane landed and embracing the culture of all he visited. This pilgrim has reached his goal. His pilgrimage has ended as he returned to his Father’s house. I suspect the reception awaiting him was a simple meal of broken bread and cups of wine. He wasn’t a man of fussiness; he was a man of simple gestures of love.

Let us continue to thank the Lord in the days to come for his gifts and ask the Lord to send his Spirit to guide our Church into a new age with a new pontiff and with a new vision of a pilgrimage that is about to begin.

God Love You

-Father Peter
