Lenten Almsgiving 2005
As a parish committed to stewardship, Saint Barnabas continually shares its resources with the needy, both among and around us. During Lent, we have always made a special effort to do even more in this regard. For each of the six weeks, $500 from the parish collection is sent to a group or agency which serves the needy in a particular way. Some of you who wish may even send a contribution, on your own, to these charities. This week our parish donation will be sent to St. Raphael’s Church, 35-20 Greenpoint Avenue, Long Island City, NY 11101. This is a multi-cultural parish whose parishioners are really struggling. Collections are low in this small parish which is trying to meet the needs of the parishioners. Any help we give will be very much appreciated.

Golden Wedding
Sunday, April 3rd, couples married 50 years or more who have not already been honored by the Bishop - are invited to receive a special blessing and certificate from His Excellency Paul Walsh, following the celebration of the Eucharist at St. Rose of Lima, Massapequa, at 3:00 PM. Pick up your registration card at the rectory, and return it to the Office of Laity and Family before March 16th. You will receive your nametags 10 days before the ceremony.

Rosary Altar Society
Our Annual Dinner-Fashion Show and Chinese Auction will be held on Wednesday, April 6th at 7:00 PM at the Coral House in Baldwin. The fashions will be from Elena’s Bridal Couture in Merrick. Tickets are $31 per person. Please contact Linda Dunbar at 221-4479 for reservations and tickets.

Soup’s On!
On Friday, March 18th, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, we will gather again in the school cafeteria, with some of our neighbors from the other Christian churches in Bellmore, to keep the Lenten Fast together at our Annual Soup Supper, hosted by the parish’s Social Justice Committee, Parish Outreach and Youth Group. This year, we are honored to have as a guest speaker, Linda Juergens, Executive Director of the National Association of Mothers’ Centers. This organization addresses the needs of mothers through a network of programs. Linda will share with us how Mothers’ Centers offer mothers a place to learn, to listen, and to be listened to. She will focus particularly on postpartum supports, which are very needed and very scarce. An anonymous, free-will offering to help the National Association of Mothers’ Centers will be taken up that evening. A simple Lenten meal of meatless soup, bread and beverages will be served, but we do need to know how many are planning to attend; so you must call the Outreach Office (785-6243) by Monday, March 14th, with the number in your group. This way, no one will be shorted on soup or seats. Our Soup Supper has always been a great Lenten activity for the whole family, and we hope you’ll make time to be with us. Invite a friend or two...call us...and come!

A Request from the Easter Bunny
The Saint Vincent de Paul Society and Outreach Office will begin preparing Easter Food Baskets for many of our needy neighbors during the next few weeks. Your help with that is a sure and visible way to share the Good News of Jesus’ Resurrection, and celebrate His Gift of New Life; so, of course, we welcome it, counting as always, on your great generosity. Our Easter Baskets get packed with all the usual things - hot & cold cereal, pancake mix & syrup, canned soups, instant potatoes, rice-a-roni, canned fruits & vegetables, pasta & sauce, peanut butter & jelly, applesauce, cookies, coffee & tea - so if you are able to contribute a few extra items, including some Easter candy, just leave them on the lobby benches in church, or drop them at the rectory by Monday, March 14th. (We will be distributing the baskets this week.) God bless the generous love you always show to those in need!

Anointing of the Sick
The Sacrament of the Sick will be celebrated on Saturday, March 19th, after the 8:00 AM Mass. The anointing of the sick is a sacrament that strengthens those who are ill, facing surgery, those who are disabled and those in special need of God’s healing touch due to chronic physical difficulties. Those wishing to receive the sacrament should sit in the front rows of the church.

Catholic Ministries Appeal
Goal: $101,600
Pledges Received: 67, 985

As you can see we are climbing closer and closer to our goal. We need $33,615 in pledges to meet the goal set by the diocese and many have not yet shared in this campaign. The Catholic Ministries Appeal supports so many people in the diocese: the poor who find in Catholic Charities support, the seminary that trains our future priests is supported by the Appeal, the many programs of formation for the laity find are underwritten by the Appeal and some diocesan offices are supported by it. Without some of these services many would suffer and so we turn to all the members of the diocese for support. Currently the parishioner’s support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal has reach 67% of our goal. Please be assured of my gratitude to all who have shared in this Appeal. During the next several weeks we will continue to solicit your assistance with this Appeal. With each donation we move closer to our goal of $101,600. Again, I thank you for you support – in whatever you choose to do.

Friends of Thomas Bidell
One of our parish families recently suffered the tragic loss of their 13 year-old son, Thomas Bidell, to non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Although the family has excellent medical coverage, no insurance pays 100% of medical costs, and with five months of continuous treatments, the portion of the expenses that was not covered has reached staggering heights. A group of friends and neighbors has formed “The Friends of Thomas Bidell,” under the auspices of St. Barnabas’ St. Vincent de Paul Society to raise funds and do whatever they can to make life a little more bearable for these good people at this time. You can help support this worthy effort by doing one of the following:

Purchasing Grand Prize Raffle tickets
Grand Prize: A complete Dell Computer; 2nd Prize: A Silver iPod Mini; 3rd Price: A 7” Screen Personal DVD Player. Raffle tickets are $20 each or 3 for $50.

Purchasing an ad in the Memorial Journal
Ads can be personal or business. Prices are: Gold Page-$300; Silver Page-200; Full Page (white)-$100; Half Page-$60; Quarter Page (business card)-$35; One line (60 characters)-$10. Ads are due no later than March 21st.

Make a monetary donation in any amount you can.
Donors will be acknowledged in the Journal, unless they request to remain anonymous. Ads can be camera-ready, or submit the text to be typeset. Type or print clearly. Please look into your heart and finances and do whatever you can to help.

If you have any questions, please call Mary Redler at 785-0246. Make checks payable to “St. Barnabas St. Vincent de Paul Society” and write “Friends of Thomas Bidell” in the memo area, and drop it off at the rectory along with the completed form, which you can access by CLICKING HERE. Thank you for whatever you decide to do to help.

March 13, 2005

My dear friends,

Many of us get inspiration e-mails and some of us find them a little overwhelming since so many come our way. Occasionally one strikes you as memorable and that’s true of the note below. The attitude of this senior citizen applies not only to the seniors among us but to each and every one of us. Spend a few moments with yourself after reading this.

A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with her hair fashionably coifed and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.

After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet curtains that had been hung on her window. "I love it," she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old, having just been presented with a new puppy. “Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room...just wait.” “That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged … it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice: I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away … just for this time in my life.”

Old age is like a bank account: you withdraw from what you've put in.

One can well imagine this feisty 92-year-old making her way into her new life with a smile on her face and bringing joy to all she meets. As we continue our Lenten journey, let us take her advice and search for ways to provide happiness and joy to those who share our lives.

God Love You

-Father Peter
