Catholic Ministries Appeal
Goal: $101,600
Pledges Received: $ 67,985

As you can see we are climbing closer and closer to our goal. We need $33,615 in pledges to meet the goal set by the diocese and many have not yet shared in this campaign. If you can, please join the parish in supporting those in need who are served by this Appeal, namely Catholic Charities that reaches out to the poor, the educational and formational programs that have been of service to hundreds of parishioners, the Seminary itself which educates the laity as well as future priests and of course our parish should we meet our goal. A special request for consideration goes out to those who have supported the Appeal in the past and who currently have not sent in a pledge card. Currently the parishioner’s support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal has reached 67% of our goal. Please be assured of my gratitude to all who have shared in this Appeal. In addition to these pledges we have received $7,025 in donations to the parish from those who wish to make an offering in lieu of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Several parishioners have also indicated that they have made contributions directly to other charities. During the next several weeks we will continue to solicit your assistance with this Appeal. With each donation we move closer to our goal of $101,600. Again, I thank you for you support – in whatever you choose to do.

Lenten Almsgiving 2005
As a parish committed to stewardship, Saint Barnabas continually shares its resources with the needy, both among and around us. During Lent, we have always made a special effort to do even more in this regard. For each of the six weeks, $500 from the parish collection is sent to a group or agency which serves the needy in a particular way. Some of you who wish may even send a contribution, on your own, to these charities. This week our parish donation will be sent to the Tsunami Relief Fund, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 249 Broadway, Bethpage, NY 11714. We are all aware of the thousands of people who have been affected by the December 26th earthquake and tsunami. Our donation at this time will help in the relief effort. If you send a check, please make it out to St. Vincent de Paul Society and put Tsunami Relief Fund in the memo. Thank you.

Soup’s On!
On Friday, March 18th, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, we will gather again in the school cafeteria, with some of our neighbors from the other Christian churches in Bellmore, to keep the Lenten Fast together at our Annual Soup Supper, hosted by the parish’s Social Justice Committee, Parish Outreach and Youth Group. This year, we are honored to have as a guest speaker, Linda Juergens, Executive Director of the National Association of Mothers’ Centers. This organization addresses the needs of mothers through a network of programs. Linda will share with us how Mothers’ Centers offer mothers a place to learn, to listen, and to be listened to. She will focus particularly on postpartum supports, which are very needed and very scarce. An anonymous, free-will offering to help the National Association of Mothers’ Centers will be taken up that evening. A simple Lenten meal of meatless soup, bread and beverages will be served, but we do need to know how many are planning to attend; so you must call the Outreach Office (785-6243) by Monday, March 14th, with the number in your group. This way, no one will be shorted on soup or seats. Our Soup Supper has always been a great Lenten activity for the whole family, and we hope you’ll make time to be with us. Invite a friend or two...call us...and come!

A Request from the Easter Bunny

Your help with that is a sure and visible way to share the Good News of Jesus’ Resurrection, and celebrate His Gift of New Life; so, of course, we welcome it, counting as always, on your great generosity. Our Easter Baskets get packed with all the usual things - hot & cold cereal, pancake mix & syrup, canned soups, instant potatoes, rice-a-roni, canned fruits & vegetables, pasta & sauce, peanut butter & jelly, applesauce, cookies, coffee & tea - so if you are able to contribute a few extra items, including some Easter candy, just leave them on the lobby benches in church, or drop them at the rectory by Monday, March 14th. (We will be distributing the baskets that week.) God bless the generous love you always show to those in need!

March 6, 2005

My dear friends,

At a funeral last week one of the readings was from the Book of Ecclesiastes suggesting “There is a time for every season under heaven. A time to be born, a time to die, a time to laugh, a time to mourn.” Later that evening remembering the reading and reflecting on the number of funerals we have celebrated as a parish since Christmas (35 funerals), I sat and wondered.

Our funerals have included the very old – a woman who was 103 -- and the very young – a 13 year old boy. Some of the people we prayed for were very familiar faces in our parish who gave endless hours of service in one way or the other and others were people with whom we shared only our shared faith. But at each funeral, at each wake service, as one of us spoke with some member of the family, one could not help but realize the impact the deceased had on endless numbers of people.

There are so many people offering support to the sick and dying as well as to those who mourn. Sister William Noreen visits endless numbers of people weekly to bring the prayers and the presence of the parish to the sick and their families, and our Ministry of Consolation provides companionship to our families as they face the loss of a loved one and need some direction and counsel as they plan the most fitting way to pray during this time of loss. We are fortunate to have these people in our midst. There is no lonelier time than in a time of sickness, and one of the times we are most fragile is when we mourn. The presence of loving and caring people makes all the difference.

As we continue our Lenten journey, we are reminded through the Gospels of the many ways Jesus walks our journey with us. Today’s Gospel reminded us that our blindness is often cured by the loving touch of Jesus. As Jesus’ faithful followers, we are the loving touch of the Lord for others at this time. Reach out and live the love that we are called to day after day by the Lord.

God Love You

-Father Peter
