Lenten Almsgiving 2005
As a parish committed to stewardship, Saint Barnabas continually shares its resources with the needy, both among and around us. During Lent, we have always made a special effort to do even more in this regard. For each of the six weeks, $500 from the parish collection is sent to a group or agency which serves the needy in a particular way. Some of you who wish may even send a contribution, on your own, to these charities. This week our parish donation will be sent to our own Father Rene Tapel, Mater Salutis College Seminary, Sipi, Daraga, Albay, Philippines 4501. Father Rene has shared with Father Peter stories of the widespread devastation that occurred as a result of the typhoons and cyclones that have plagued the islands this past year. Many of the typhoon victims are poor fishermen who put out to sea even in a storm because that is the source of their livelihood. Any help we can give will be most appreciated.

February 27, 2005

My dear friends,

Perhaps it’s the snow or the threat of snow, perhaps it’s old age or perhaps it is the busyness of life, but it seems to me that the weeks have flown by incredibly fast since Christmas. Easter is just around the corner – when will life slow down a bit. I’m sure many of you ask yourselves the same question.

Those of you with young children are especially busy it seems to me. With all the pick-up and delivery of your children that surrounds your life, the challenge to parents surely surpasses any expectation you may have had. It takes a tremendous amount of skill to raise a child, and the training course from what I see is quite limited. Not personally being a TV watcher, one program I happened upon a few nights ago surprised me. It was about an English nanny who was teaching parents how to guide and direct their children. One could not help but feel for the parents who were struggling with the developing personalities of their children. As I watched it, I wondered how many parents need similar help in dealing with the challenges that face them each day, each hour and each week as they try to direct and guide their children. Often too there seems to be little or no relief or support in sight for the parents.

As a community we need to be there for one another and perhaps there are ways in which we could be there for our parents that currently we are not imagining. Any suggestions you might have would certainly be welcome. Both our Catholic school and our religious education program serve as supports for our families but maybe you see something that we have not yet seen. Don’t hesitate to speak or write to any of the staff and maybe we can address some need we are currently unaware of.

In the meantime, know that we are praying with you and for you that the Lord will always be our support through the challenges that life lays in our paths.

God Love You

-Father Peter
