Lenten Almsgiving 2005
As a parish committed to stewardship, Saint Barnabas continually shares its resources with the needy, both among and around us. During Lent, we have always made a special effort to do even more in this regard. For each of the six weeks, $500 from the parish collection is sent to a group or agency which serves the needy in a particular way. Some of you who wish may even send a contribution, on your own, to these charities. This week our parish donation will be sent to Good Shepherd Hospice, 4747-20 Nesconset Highway, Port Jefferson, New York, NY 11776, which provides compassionate medical, spiritual and emotional support for the terminally ill on Long Island, as well as 13 months of bereavement services for those who survive. Good Shepherd’s philosophy, “no one should ever have to feel alone”, has been felt in the care given to many of our own parishioners, and our help now might be considered a small token of thanks.

Bereavement Support Group
For your convenience, our Bereavement Support Group will have two Wednesday sessions beginning March 2nd at 10:30 AM and 7:30 PM. Both will take place in the rectory meeting room. This is an eight-week program conducted by two trained facilitators. If you have recently experienced the loss of a spouse, please consider being with us, and know that you are most welcome. For additional information, call Margaret Pariseau at the Outreach Office, 785-6243.

Anointing of the Sick
The Sacrament of the Sick will be celebrated on Saturday, February 26th, after the 8:00 AM Mass. The anointing of the sick is a sacrament that strengthens those who are ill, facing surgery, those who are disabled and those in special need of God’s healing touch due to chronic physical difficulties. Those wishing to receive the sacrament should sit in the front rows of the church.

Many Thanks
Thank you so much to all the generous people who took the time to donate at our annual Lenten Blood Drive last Sunday. We registered 107 donors and collected 104 pints of blood. Your blood will be a lifesaver, literally, for someone who needs it. A big thank you also goes to all those volunteers who helped with registration and snacks. Thanks, too, to Boy Scout Troop 580 for serving as escorts for our donors. We’re very grateful to all who contributed to a successful blood drive.

February 20, 2005

My dear friends,

For so many of us last week’s retreat provided a special time of prayer, reconciliation and reflection. We gathered in Church to hear God’s Word and to be guided by Father George Schommer through the days of retreat. Father George’s prayerful conferences provided us with some simple but direct guidance for our Lenten journey. Basically on Sunday he challenged us “to be fully human and fully alive” by putting aside those things which lessen our humanity and distract us from what is important in life. All of us could spend the remaining days of Lent reflecting on this call to greater humanity and to a closer relationship with God our Father and our brother Jesus.

As we continue this special season the parish has many opportunities available for our spiritual growth supporting our own efforts of spiritual renewal. Our bulletin lists these many opportunities. Please join us for them.

+ + + + + + + + + +

During the past week many of you have read in our newspapers of the sad closing of Catholic elementary both very near to us (St. Bernard’s in Levittown) and further away (in the Diocese of Brooklyn.) This is a sad and difficult time for all involved in these closures. Our parish fortunately has been able to celebrate Catholic Education in our midst through St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Regional School. As we celebrated Catholic Schools Week the parish once again generously supported our school. The special collection amounted to $5,472 which certainly will assist the school in its mission to our youngest parishioners. As parishioners of St. Barnabas you can help in another way and that is to encourage friends who have young children to share in the life of the school. We have a wonderful school under the fine leadership of an excellent principal, Ms. Leeann Graziose, and blessed with a dedicated and experienced faculty. Hopefully, our common support will see our school flourish for many years to come.

God Love You

-Father Peter
