This film may be one of the most powerful contemporary art form. Religious films are the most difficult to create. Is Mel Gibson’s film one of them?
Lenten Almsgiving 2005
As a parish committed to stewardship, Saint Barnabas continually shares its resources with the needy, both among and around us. During Lent, we have always made a special effort to do even more in this regard. For each of the six weeks, $500 from the parish collection is sent to a group or agency which serves the needy in a particular way. Some of you who wish may even send a contribution, on your own, to these charities. This week our parish donation will be sent to God’s Love We Deliver, 166 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10013, which provides nutritious, life-sustaining meals to anyone in the five boroughs of New York City and surrounding areas who is living with HIV/AIDS, cancer or other serious illness. God’s Love We Deliver makes such a difference in the lives of over 1,400 men, women and children who are too sick to shop and cook for themselves.

Christian Ministries Appeal
Last weekend parishioners pledged $48,146 for the Catholic Ministries Appeal toward our goal of $103,000. The parish staff thanks all who have made a pledge for your support. Once again this week, we offered you an opportunity to complete a pledge card in the pew. Whatever you can do is most appreciated. If you have any questions about the Appeal, please contact Father Peter in the rectory. Those who seek to donate directly to the parish or seek an alternative method of donating can contact Father Peter in the rectory. Some parishioners have chosen to donate directly to the parish in lieu of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Their contributions have amounted to $5,050.
Helping our Soldiers
Recently we received this note from Msgr. Thomas Molloy, a chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserve who works with our soldiers on both sides of the ocean. The note is self-explanatory and is a wonderful way for all of us to support those currently serving in the war in Iraq.
I just returned from serving as the Army Chaplain at the military hospital at Landstuhl, Germany, where wounded soldiers are flown after being stabilized at a field hospital. They receive wonderful medical care but because they are evacuated so rapidly from the battlefield to Kandaharr Airport, to Ramstein Air Force Base, and on to the hospital at Landstuhl, they find themselves temporarily with almost nothing. Most of their “stuff” is either back at Fort Wherever USA or lost. What they carried in their backpacks is scattered on the ground in Iraq at the spot where they were wounded when they were loaded onto a helicopter for transport to a hospital. The soldiers could use our help in sending them a few basics that would make life more comfortable. They need the following: Tee shirts (S,M,L); men’s underpants (size 32-42); women’s underpants (sizes 6-9); sweat pants and shirts (S,M,L); sports bras (all sizes); socks and tennis shoes (size 8-13), pajamas; tote or gym bags. For wounded soldiers able to walk or get around in a wheelchair, send Burger King gift certificates (in the hospital there is a Burger King and it is a welcome change from hospital food) and AT & T prepaid phone cards so the soldier can make a call home. Homemade “Get Well” cards from the kids are always a big hit. Send any of the above to:

Operation Rice Bowl - Lent 2005
Working together as a faith community, our parish will again participate in Operation Rice Bowl this Lent. “Rice Bowl” is a special Lenten Program of Catholic Relief Services coordinated by our Social Justice Committee, which gives the parish a unique opportunity to pray, fast, learn and share, as we are called to do during Lent. Our Lenten offering to Operation Rice Bowl supports Catholics Relief Services as it works to alleviate human suffering in more than 87 countries. The Rice Bowls and a Lenten Calendar with a daily reflection for Lent have been placed in baskets in the back of the Church today. When Lent ends, the contributions you have saved in your own rice bowl should be returned in check form, made payable to St. Barnabas Church. A second collection, on the weekend of April 2nd & 3rd, will be taken for this purpose. Our total donation as a parish will then be forwarded to Catholic Relief Services. Look for more information on Operation Rice Bowl as Lent continues and thanks very much for anything you might do to help.
