St. Joseph’s Back
Many of you have commented how wonderful St. Joseph looks in his original wooden look. Actually he looks very much like he did when he was hung in the Church 48 years ago. St. Barnabas is off for a makeover at this time and the Blessed Mother will follow later in Lent. It is my hope they are all in place for Easter.

Bake Sale
The Tots and Moms Group will be having a Valentine’s Bake Sale on Saturday, February 12th following the 5:00 PM Mass and Sunday, February 13th following the 9:00 AM, 10:15 AM, 10:30 AM and 12 Noon Masses. Your support is appreciated.

Operation Rice Bowl - Lent 2005
Working together as a faith community, our parish will again participate in Operation Rice Bowl this Lent. “Rice Bowl” is a special Lenten Program of Catholic Relief Services coordinated by our Social Justice Committee, which gives the parish a unique opportunity to pray, fast, learn and share, as we are called to do during Lent. Our Lenten offering to Operation Rice Bowl supports Catholics Relief Services as it works to alleviate human suffering in more than 87 countries. The Rice Bowls and a Lenten Calendar with a daily reflection for Lent have been placed in baskets in the back of the Church today. When Lent ends, the contributions you have saved in your own rice bowl should be returned in check form, made payable to St. Barnabas Church. A second collection, on the weekend of April 2nd & 3rd, will be taken for this purpose. Our total donation as a parish will then be forwarded to Catholic Relief Services. Look for more information on Operation Rice Bowl as Lent continues and thanks very much for anything you might do to help.

Stations of the Cross with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament
Recalling the Passion of the Lord Jesus during the season of Lent has nourished Catholics from the earliest days of Christianity. One of the traditional ways in which we recall Jesus’ way of the cross is the praying of the Stations of the Cross. Join us for the stations on each of the following Fridays: February 11th, 18th, 25th, March 4th, 11th and 18th at 1:30 PM in the Church. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will conclude the service.

Charismatic Renewal Center
The Diocesan Office of Charismatic Renewal will sponsor a Healing Mass on Monday, February 7th, in the Holy Family Chapel at 7:30 PM. The celebrant will be Father Anthony (Toni) Mario Ozele. Father Anthony resides in the Brooklyn Diocese while attending Fordham University. He is ministering at International Conferences, Parish Lenten retreats as well as celebrating Healing Masses in the Brooklyn and Rockville Centre dioceses. Everyone will have the opportunity to be prayed with.

Monday, February 7th, 7:30 PM, Upper Church

The familiar parable of the Sower reminds each Christian of the importance of planting the seed of God’s Word in the soil of one’s life. The New Testament is the Word of God, specially addressed to the Christian bearer. We will take a look at the basic elements of the New Testament and the types of seeds it offers for bearing fruit.

Blood Drive
Our annual Lenten Blood Drive will be held in the school cafeteria next Sunday, February 13th, from 8:15 AM to 1:30 PM. There is a critical shortage of blood so we are hoping, in the spirit of Lenten giving, many will take a few minutes to donate. If you are able to help, please fill out a pledge card in the back of the Church or in the rectory, or call Margaret Pariseau at Outreach with your name and number so we can schedule all appointments. Please help - it’ll be a lifesaver!

Christian Ministries Appeal
Last weekend parishioners pledged $26,670 for the Catholic Ministries Appeal. As was mentioned last weekend, our goal is $103,000. The parish staff thanks all who have made a pledge for your support. Once again this week, we offered you an opportunity to complete a pledge card in the pew. A pledge of $200 might seem impossible as a single donation, but when seen as a $20 gift each month, it becomes much more accessible. Whatever you can do is most appreciated. If you have any questions about the Appeal, please contact Father Peter in the rectory.

Those who wish to donate directly to the parish or seek an alternative method of donating can contact Father Peter in the rectory or speak with one of the Appeal volunteers in the lobby of the Church. I’d ask that those who want to complete a pledge card, please do so at this time as the collection is taken.

RCIA News
On Saturday, February 12th at the 5:00 PM Mass, St. Barnabas parish will celebrate the Rite of Sending for our candidate, Jennifer Signorelli. She will meet with Bishop Walsh at St. Agnes Cathedral to celebrate the Call to Continuing Conversion on Sunday, February 20th at 2:00 PM. Any parishioner is invited to attend. Please join us in praying for Jennifer who now enters the period of Purification and Enlightenment of the RCIA process.

Ash Wednesday
The Eucharist will be celebrated on Ash Wednesday, February 9th, at 6:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 12 Noon and 8:00 PM. Ashes will be distributed after the homily at each of these celebrations. There will also be a Service of the Word at 4:15 PM and 6:00 PM at which times ashes will be distributed.

Ash Wednesday Collection
There will be a special collection at the Masses and Services of the Word on Ash Wednesday to help the Catholic Church in Central and Western Europe.

Rules of Fast and Abstinence
During the season of Lent the Church calls us to fast and abstain. The days of fast are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fast means that those between the ages of 18 and 59 limit themselves to one full meal and eat nothing between meals. All the Fridays of Lent, as well as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, are also days of abstinence, which means that those 14 years of age and older are to abstain from eating meat.

Valentine’s Celebration
With the feast of St. Valentine on Monday this year, we have decided to celebrate it with the Eucharist on this coming Saturday morning, February 12th at 9:45 AM. At this mass we will offer couples the opportunity to renew their marriage vows and witness the renewal of vows of one parish couple who are 50 years married on that day. Join us and celebrate the gift of your love and the holiness of your sacrament. Hospitality will follow this mass.

World Day of Prayer for the Sick
On Friday, February 11th , the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Church throughout the world prays in a special way for those who are sick and suffering. So many of our lives are touched by the sickness of loved ones and friends and we find praying for them a privilege. During the day on this feast of Mary, let us pray that the sick might find the consolation of the Lord in the midst of their suffering. As we remember the sick, let us also remember our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II in his time of illness.

Prayer for the Sick
Compassionate and Loving Father, hear our prayers this day for all the sick and suffering, especially N…….
When they are afraid, give them courage, when afflicted, give them patience, and when dejected, afford them hope and when alone, assure them of the support of your holy people. We make this prayer through the intercession of Mary, the Virgin of Lourdes and through Christ our Lord. Amen

February 6 , 2005

My dear friends,

What a combination……Super Bowl Sunday followed by Mardi Gras followed by Ash Wednesday. For some people I imagine Ash Wednesday will be like a cold shower on a cold day, that is, quite a shock to the system. No matter what our involvement in the celebrations that surround Super Bowl Sunday or Mardi Gras, the celebration of Ash Wednesday will be something in which we all share as Catholics.

With most of you I sit wondering how to make Lent a holy time and not a time for dieting or a new exercise regime. The truth of the matter is that the season is about the heart and not the waistline or the muscle tone. Each of us knows well the condition of our heart. Some find it hardened by indifference others find it blocked by self concerned but all of us know the feeling of a healthy heart beating away for the Love of God and others.

Thankfully once again this year our Lenten season begins with the wonderful invitation to share in a parish Lenten retreat. So many people tell me how they look forward to this special time of prayer each year. As you can see from the cover of our bulletin, Father George Schommer will lead us along the pathways of prayer into a more intimate union with the Eucharistic Lord. Be sure to clear your calendars and so share in this Lenten experience.

Lent, like so many other experiences in life, will fly by and before we know it we will be saying – “It can’t be Easter, why it’s not even April.” That’s right we gather around the Paschal Candle singing Alleluia well before we welcome the April showers that bring May flowers. So set the course, create the plan, lay out the hopes for your Lent today – before you get to the Super Bowl Party or the Mardi Gras celebration or the wonderful fried delicacies that are part of Fat Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday) in so many cultures.

All of us at St. Barnabas look forward to sharing the Lenten Season with you. Have a Happy Lent!

God Love You

-Father Peter
