Adult Faith Formation
The Sower, The Seed and the Soil - The Message of the New Testament
Monday, February 7th, 7:30 PM, Upper Church
Rev. Patrick Griffin, CM,
Professor of Sacred Scripture, Seminary of the Immaculate Conception

The familiar parable of the Sower reminds each Christian of the importance of planning the seed of God’s Word in the soil of one’s life. The New Testament is the Word of God, which is specially addressed to the Christian bearer. In this session, we will take a look at the basic elements of the New Testament and the types of seeds it offers for bearing fruit.

We Want Your Blood
Our Annual Lenten Blood Drive will be held in the school cafeteria on the First Sunday of Lent, February 13th, from 8:15 AM to 1:30 PM. As we know from recent media reports, there is a critical shortage of blood right now, so we are hoping that, in the spirit of Lenten giving, many will take a few minutes, that day, to donate. As a donor, you must be at least 17 years old, 110 pounds, and in generally good health. If you are able to help, just fill out a pledge card - there are some in the back of the Church and in the rectory, or call Margaret Pariseau at Outreach (785-6243) with your name and phone number by Friday, February 4th, so we have enough time to schedule all the appointments. We are shooting for a record 150 donors this year, and you can put us over the top - so please help...it’ll be a lifesaver!

Bishop Murphy’s Lenten Vocation Retreat
Seminary of the Immaculate Conception
March 4th & 5th

We all have a vocation in life. Some are called to be married, and some are called to be single. Others are called to a vocation, which involves serving the Lord in a special way. To decide what your vocation in life is, it is helpful to pray to the Holy Spirit for discernment. If you are interested in a priestly vocation, Bishop Murphy, along with priests and seminarians of the Diocese invite you to join in this weekend retreat. Arrival will be at 5:00 PM Friday, March 4th and conclude after Mass at Noon on Sunday, March 6th. There is no fee but pre-registration is required. For further information or to register, please contact Fr. Tom Coogan at the Vocation Office at 631-424-9888.
What’s Up, Up There?
Little by little the last bits of the work are being completed. Those familiar with construction will recognize that we are working our way through the “punch list.” With the arrival of spring we can replant our gardens.

Where’s St. Joseph
St. Joseph’s statue will return this coming week having enjoyed a make-over to use the fashionable term. St. Barnabas will travel to the shop when St. Joseph returns. Mary will have a make over later in the month or in early February.

January 16, 2005

My dear friends,

Once again I want to thank you for your generosity in offering much needed contributions to the victims of the tsunami disaster in South Asia. Each day new revelations highlight the extent of the tragedy and the devastation and sorrow these people are facing. Our support both financially and in prayer will no doubt be a help to those suffering most. Thank you so very much for your generous concern.

When I think of the month of January I am always reminded that during this month we begin again the annual Catholic Ministries Appeal (formerly known as the Bishop’s Appeal). For the next several weekends, we will once again call upon you to share in this annual request for support for the many ministries that are funded by the diocese at large. Many of these ministries have struggled during the past few years because of the decreased financial support. Hopefully as we begin to deal more honestly and forthrightly with the devastating revelations of sexual abuse in our Church, we will find it possible to offer support once again to the diocesan ministries that serve our parishioners and the many Catholics throughout the diocese.

Chief among those supported by this appeal are Catholic Charities (with its many agencies of outreach to the poor), Pastoral Ministry (which includes the various support programs like bereavement and teen ministry), Education (which includes the programs that train catechists, ministers of holy communion, and lectors), Formation (which includes the Pastoral Formation Program of our laity and the seminary) and the Parishes themselves. All these areas survive on the support they receive through the Appeal and other forms of contribution.

Hopefully you will join in supporting this program. The goal set for the parish this year is $101,600. Last year the parishioners pledged $85,959. Through the sharing that the diocese provides to the parish through this campaign we received $8,342 back. Thank you to all of you who supported last year’s appeal. Hopefully many more will join in the campaign this year in offering their support.

May our continued effort to support this parish through good stewardship and the shared use of our time, talent and treasure, bring us closer to our God and one another.

God Love You

-Father Peter
