Mary, Servant of the Lord
Mary, you’ve come a long way
from simply being Mary,
“a virgin betrothed to a man
named Joseph, of the House of David.”

“Mother of God,”
“Mother of the Church,”
“Queen of the Universe,”
“Queen of Families.”
I still prefer your own
simple description for yourself,
“servant.”
“I am the servant of the Lord.”

Mary, may we stop
being concerned about titles
and simply be like you,
servants too!

- Andrew Costello

January 2, 2005

My dear friends,

Carrying their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, the Wise Men from the East came to worship the Lord. As we celebrate today the feast of the Lord’s Epiphany, let us reflect on the gifts we bring to our God each day and to one another. Let me share with you my gratitude.

For your faith: While many people seek from their priests and religious the gift of faith, you cannot imagine how your faith in God and in God’s people nourishes me. Repeatedly I am touched by your devotion to prayer and to the Eucharist. Faith-filled people often ask my prayers for friend and family, but I often think to myself, that your prayers are so much more effective as they come from such beautiful hearts.

For your deeds of love: Whether it is in caring for an ailing parent or a cranky child, so many of you express your faith in the daily deeds of devotion to your families and friends. Boundless is your generosity when it comes to reaching out to the needy in our community. You cannot imagine the sign of faith that these deeds of love are to others and to me.

For your patient endurance: Troubled as many of us are by the infirmity of our lives and the lives of those we love, I cannot help but be touched by your faith that in God this suffering is redemptive. As you come to this Church and the altar with your deepest desires and pains, I find my faith nourished by your belief in God’s power to heal.

For your heartfelt gratitude: To give thanks is a God given gift reserved for God’s highest creation – the human person. Your grateful words and deeds speak volumes to my heart and make the difficulties of life seem trivial.

For the variety of Gifts in our People: Our Christmas season has seen the gifts of so many come to life. Each of you has served God’s people by sharing gifts and food with the less fortunate. Gratitude fills my heart when I think of the endless devoted hours given by the volunteers in our parish Outreach program and our St. Vincent DePaul Society reaching out as they did to God’s people. We have a phenomenal parish extraordinary in its generosity.

For the parish staff: Give thanks with me for those who serve on the parish staff – those known as the pastoral staff and those who work for our parish. Their goodness and generosity comes through in the way that they share their goodness day in and day out with all of us. May the Lord continue to bless each of them!

For you: Thank you for being the loving expression of God’s love that you are. I know I speak for all that serve as ministers in this parish when I say thank you for being you. God was wonderfully creative when each of us was uniquely created. You are a beautiful expression of God’s love and I hope you know it.

May you be blessed during this coming year as we give thanks to God and to one another.

God Love You

-Father Peter
