May 7, 2006

My dear friends,

During the Easter season we listen to many readings from the Acts of Apostles that describe the experiences of the Early Church especially in the days following the death of Jesus. Our Gospels too reflect many post-resurrection appearances of Jesus to his apostles, his disciples and his followers. The wonderful thing about the experiences of these followers of Jesus in the days following his death and resurrection is that so many of our experiences are found in theirs. They have moments when their faith is strong and filled with the enthusiasm of God’s action in their lives while at other times doubt surrounds their lives and they wonder how they will continue to be part of this group that follows the teachings of Jesus. On the one hand, apostles like Thomas and Philip ask questions that we wonder why they asked them. Peter, on the other hand, is at times simply filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit and finds himself preaching to 5,000 people (a real phenomenon in his day.)

Like the people in the Early Church we may find ourselves in similar moments in our own lives – times when we are filled with the enthusiasm of the Spirit and other times when we find ourselves depressed or doubtful about our life in the Church. Some of the crises that have surrounded the Church’s life in recent years have also left us with questions to which we would like more answers.

Currently the press has saturated us with information about a novel that will now become a movie – The DaVinci Code. So many people are concerned about this film. I smile when I think of all the ink that has been spent on this novel and movie. Unfortunately people often take for Gospel truth anything they read that comments on the various aspects of our religion. This latest novel (and it is just that – a novel – a work of fiction) presents questions about some long held beliefs of our faith and most of these concerns are unfounded in history or theology. One commentary to which you might give your attention is the columns in The Long Island Catholic by Bishop Emil Wcela on the book. In viewing the movie or reading the book the best approach to it will be to always have in the back of your mind that this is historical fiction. Some historical data is linked to some fictional aspects of the novel and suddenly it is fact. Of course we know this is not the case in reality. So whether you see the movie or read the book is immaterial. The important thing is not to give it a place in your theological understanding of our faith but rather file it under the novels you have or haven’t enjoyed. The bottom line is the author is a rich man because of his writing skill and historical plot. He is not a theology teacher. When you need a theologian there are many good places to search.

As we listen to the Scriptures during this Easter season, let us search them for moments of personal growth and thus allow this special time to be graced filled for each of us. And if we struggle with doubt or problems, those too can be entrusted to the Lord. We have a long tradition of doing just that.

God Love You

-Father Peter
