Bereavement Support Group
This fall our Bereavement Support Group will meet on Tuesday evenings beginning October 5th at 7:30 PM in the rectory meeting room. This is an eight week program, conducted by trained facilitators. If you have experienced the loss of a spouse, please consider being with us, and know that you will be most welcome. The grieving process is often made easier by sharing with others who have been through the same experience, call Susan in Parish Outreach 785-6243.

Respect Life Sunday Collection
Today is Respect Life Sunday. As we celebrate Respect Life Sunday, we are reminded that the assaults on human dignity come in many forms. The Respect Life Office is charged with deepening our already strong commitment to pro-life activities and parish education. Please support this vital work through participation in the special Respect Life envelope collection. Your prayers and assistance are greatly appreciated.

Rosary Society
Our meeting will be held on Monday, October 4th in the school cafeteria. Please arrive at 7:00 PM for our business meeting. The program for the evening will be a presentation on the Miracle of Fatima, given by Jose Ferraz of “America Needs Fatima”, starting at 7:30 PM. Bring your rosary beads. All are welcome.

Golden Wedding Jubilee
On Sunday, November 7th at 2:30 PM couples married 50 years or more are invited to a special Mass celebrated by Bishop William Murphy at St Rose of Lima in Massapequa. Word of Life
The absence of a government-wide law against federal funding of abortion has led most recently to the passage of major health care reform legislation that contains at least three different policies on federal funding of abortion - none of which is consistent with the Hyde amendment … or with similar longstanding provisions that govern all other health programs. For example, one provision … violates Hyde’s second sentence (against funding health plans that cover abortions) - and then violates the spirit of the entire amendment, by directly forcing conscientiously opposed citizens in many plans to fund other people’s abortions through their health premiums (sec.1303). Another provision … allows funds to be used for abortions or not, depending on a decision by the Secretary of Health and Human Services (sec. 1101). Yet another provision … allows its new funding for community health centers to be governed by the underlying mandates in the authorizing legislation for these centers - mandates that in other health programs have been interpreted by the federal courts to require federal funding of abortion (Sec. 10503). These disparate policies are not compatible with the Hyde amendment, or even with one another. This is one reason why passage of a bill like H.R. 5939 [“No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act”] is overdue.

My dear Parishioners,

It is a joy to share with you the “Good News” that this year’s recipient of the St. Agnes Medal of Service from our parish is Mrs. Theresa Hubert.

Our dear Father Peter shared with me, just before leaving St. Barnabas that he had submitted Terry’s name to Bishop Murphy to receive this year’s award.

How special is Terry, and in my short time here, I have experienced Terry’s love and dynamism for St. Barnabas Parish.

Fr. Peter, in sharing with Bishop Murphy Terry’s many areas of service to our parish life, singled out, especially, Terry’s past 12 years of service to our RCIA program both directing it and sharing in the formation of the candidates for full communion and the catechumens.

Terry serves us as a faithful extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, Minister to the sick and homebound, Minister of Consolation and years of classroom teaching of our young children in our religious education program.

Know how grateful I am with all of you for Terry’s gift of faith, dedication and prayerful, joyful service to our parish family of St. Barnabas.

This retreat, designed for those facing serious illness, will be September 24th - 26th, at the Montfort Spirituality Center in Bay Shore. Basketball Registration
Basketball registration will be on Tuesday, September 14th and Wednesday, September 15th from 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM in the school cafeteria for the following:
Saturday Morning Clinic Grade K - 2: two 8 week sessions - $60 per session.
Boys Intramurals Grade 3 - 8: 16 weeks - $135.
Girls Intramurals Grade 3 - 8: 16 weeks - $135.
Boys and Girls Travel Grade 3 - 10: 12 game schedule - $135. Travel players are subject to tryouts and must reside within the church boundary as designated by CYO. Registration must be done in person. A late fee of $30 will apply after September 15th. Mail registrations will not be accepted.

One of the unique offerings of our school is a parent and child program called Our Time! This program offers a variety of age appropriate activities for two or three year olds, such as arts and crafts, live music, story time, play time and prayer. The classes are conducted in a well structured classroom setting and are taught by Sabina Lamb, Director of Family Music at the 10:15 AM family Mass. This month we are in need of tuna, canned corn, pancake mix and syrup, tomato sauce, canned fruit, shampoo, dish soap and detergent. Anointing of the Sick
The Sacrament of the Sick will be celebrated on Saturday, August 28th after the 8:00 AM Mass. The anointing of the sick is a sacrament that strengthens those who are ill, facing surgery, those who are disabled and those in special need of God’s healing touch due to chronic physical difficulties. Those wishing to receive the sacrament should sit in the front rows of the church.

Gennesaret Retreat
This retreat, designed for those facing serious illness is planned for September 24th - 26th, at the Montfort Spirituality Center in Bay Shore. The retreat offers a respite, an oasis to enable one to continue the journey. The focus of the retreat is on God’s love, His forgiveness and His faithfulness. Spiritual Care Companion
Are you looking for an avenue to volunteer your time with others? Come learn more about sharing your gift of time and presence as a Spiritual Care Companion with those who are hospitalized or living in a nursing home or homebound.

Catholic Health Services of Long Island sponsors free six-week training, for volunteers of all faiths, with basic pastoral care skills and information to become a caring, attentive, listening presence. Topics include - communication skills, concerns of the sick and homebound, spiritual companioning, grief, death and dying, ethical issues and more. We always have a need for Spiritual Care Companions and especially those who speak English/Spanish.

RCIA is the process for those who seek full participation in the Catholic Church; those who were never baptized, and those who were baptized Catholic or in another Christian Faith who wish to receive Communion and Confirmation as Catholics. A new group will start in September and receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil Mass.
